Frieseke fu attratto a Parigi nel 1899 come studente vedendo il lavoro degli impressionisti francesi alla Chicago World Exhibition nel 1893. A Parigi è stato anche fortemente influenzato dal lavoro del suo collega americano, Whistler, da cui è stato insegnato brevemente. Questo elegantemente posto studio-cum-portrait di Maud Kelly che ha posato per diversi amici dell'artista, è stato dipinto nel letto di Frieseke-studio a Montparnasse, un povero sobborgo meridionale di Parigi. Le sue armonie cromatiche di rosa e bianco e i suoi lavaggi dipinte su cartone nudo a buon mercato mostrano molta evidenza sia della tecnica di Whistler che della propria esperienza studentesca di Frieseke e delizia nella pittura ad acquerello.
