Una casalinga detiene una mela, che in questo contesto più probabile si riferisce alla Nuova Eva (la Vergine Maria) rispetto a quella vecchia. L'uccello e il focolare implicano la felice domesticità, mentre la vite allude alla donna come "una vite fecondo dai lati della vostra casa" (Salmo 128). L'acquirente originale di un tale dipinto, se aveva opinioni sull'arte e sulle donne, probabilmente l'avrebbe descritto come un nisstuck, che significa "cazzo-pezzo" o "finestra-niche", un formato illusionistico popolare da Gerrit Dou.
