Musikalische Aufführung war ein gemeinsamer Zeitvertreib unter den gut zu tun und hatte starke Assoziationen mit Gericht in der Niederländischen Republik. Hier geht eine reich gekleidete Frau ein Liedbuch an die Dandy hinter ihr, während sie einen nichtchalanten Griff auf dem Hals ihrer Laute hält. Ein anderer beribbonierter Gentleman stimmt eine Viologe ab, sein Schwert trieb zur Seite, und ein Mägd hält in der Tür hinten mit einem Tablett von Erfrischungen. Für die Zuschauer aus dem 17. Jahrhundert hätten symbolische Elemente wie der Fußwärmer eine Atmosphäre der Vergänglichkeit und Versuchung angezeigt.
