El rendimiento musical es un pasatiempo común entre el bien a hacer y cuenta con asociaciones fuertes con cortejo en la República holandesa. Aquí, una mujer ricamente vestida pasa un cuaderno de canciones a la chica detrás de ella mientras mantiene un toque de nonchalante en el cuello de su lute. Otro caballero beribboned toca un viol, su espada se despidió al costado, y una sirvienta se detiene en la puerta de atrás con una bandeja de refrescos. Para los espectadores del siglo XVII, elementos simbólicos como el calentador del pie habrían indicado un ambiente de indulgencia y tentación.
