An Weihnachtenabend, 1776, General George Washingtons Armee überquerte den Delaware River, um einen überraschenden Angriff auf britische Truppen in Trenton, New Jersey. Sein Sieg war ein Wendepunkt in der Amerikanischen Revolution und wurde zu einem Lieblingsthema unter späteren Generationen von Malern. Der Ruhm von Emanuel Leutzes Washington Crossing the Delaware (1851) inspirierte diese heroische Szene von Genre Maler George Caleb Bingham.
