Chinnery dipinse più di una dozzina di autoritratti, il primo dei quali espose alla Royal Academy di Londra nel 1798; questo è il più intimo e coinvolgente di tutti. Una figura enigmatica, Chinnery era eccentrica e volatile, con la tendenza all'ipocondria, un raconteur e un ingegno con un dono per l'amicizia. Questa somiglianza è stata dipinta in Cina e deve datare agli anni 1825–28. Il suo primo proprietario è stato il console statunitense Benjamin Chew Wilcox, un uomo d'affari nel commercio di oppio che ha commissionato un ritratto completo di se stesso dall'artista (The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd.).
