Künstler: George Chinnery

Chinnery bemalte mehr als ein Dutzend Selbstporträts, von denen er 1798 an der Royal Academy, London, ausgestellt hatte; dies ist die intimste und engste von ihnen alle. Eine rätselhafte Figur, Chinnery war exzentrisch und flüchtig, mit einer Neigung zu Hypochondria, eine raconteur und wit mit einem Geschenk für Freundschaft. Diese Ähnlichkeit wurde in China gemalt und muss bis in die Jahre 1825–28. Sein erster Besitzer war der US-Konsul Benjamin Chew Wilcox, ein Geschäftsmann im Opiumhandel, der ein Porträt von sich selbst vom Künstler (The Hong Kong und Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd.) in Auftrag gegeben hat.
