Chinnery pintó más de una docena de autorretratos, el primero de los cuales exhibió en la Real Academia, Londres, en 1798; este es el más íntimo y atractivo de todos ellos. Una figura enigmática, Chinnery era excéntrico y volátil, con tendencia a la hipocondria, un raconteur y ingenio con un regalo para la amistad. Esta semejanza fue pintada en China y debe fechar a los años 1825–28. Su primer propietario fue el cónsul estadounidense Benjamin Chew Wilcox, un hombre de negocios en el comercio de opio que encargó un retrato completo de sí mismo del artista (The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd.).
