Louisa May Alcott ha iniziato a scrivere da giovane e ha trasformato la sua struttura in una carriera nei suoi adolescenti quando suo padre, teorico utopistico Bronson Alcott, ha lasciato la sua famiglia in terribili strati finanziari. Aiutando a sostenere la sua famiglia, pubblicò il suo primo libro, Flower Fables, nel 1854. Prestò servizio come infermiera durante la guerra civile, e la sua memorie Hospital Sketches fu pubblicata nel 1863. Chiedeto dal suo editore di scrivere un libro per le ragazze, Alcott attirò le proprie esperienze familiari per scrivere Little Women (1868). Questo romanzo di cuore racconta la vita delle quattro sorelle di marzo, Meg, Jo, Beth e Amy, mentre sono cresciute durante la guerra civile.
