Am 27. November 1776, Lady Derby saß zuerst für dieses Porträt. Sie kehrte zehnmal im Winter 1777 und 1778 in Romneys Londoner Studio zurück. Sie war dreiundzwanzig mit einem Sohn und war zweieinhalb Jahre verheiratet. Der romantische Hintergrund und ihr weißes Kleid sind typisch für Romneys Frauenporträts.
