Il 27 novembre 1776, Lady Derby si sedette per questo ritratto. Tornò nello studio di Londra di Romney dieci volte negli inverni del 1777 e del 1778. Aveva ventitre anni con un figlio e si era sposata da due anni e mezzo. Lo sfondo romantico e il suo vestito bianco sono tipici dei ritratti di Romney delle donne.
