Stubbs fece una serie di opere in diversi media che mostravano un cavallo attaccato da un leone. La sua ispirazione originale era una famosa scultura in marmo antico che probabilmente vide durante la sua visita a Roma nel 1754. L'episodio mostrato qui, con la resa finale del cavallo, è più vicino al modello classico.
