Stubbs hizo una serie de obras en diferentes medios mostrando un caballo atacado por un león. Su inspiración original fue una famosa escultura de mármol antiguo que probablemente vio en su visita a Roma en 1754. El episodio mostrado aquí, con la entrega final del caballo, es más cercano al modelo clásico. El escenario para este encuentro violento es el paisaje duro y rocoso de Creswell Crags en el distrito de Peak.
