Es un retrato de John Gibbons con su famoso buey de Herefordshire. El animal era un asombroso 6ft 3in (1.9m) alto en los hombros y pesaba 1300 kg. Un buey promedio en los 1780s habría sido de aproximadamente 4 pies (1,2 m) y pesaba 500 kg. John Gibbons, un granjero caballero de Long Sutton en las fens del sureste de Lincolnshire, ganó el buey en una pelea de gallos. Stubbs incluye al campeon gallo en esta pintura. Gibbons transportó el animal desde Lincolnshire a Londres, donde se exhibió en varias exposiciones. Lamentablemente, el buey era demasiado grande para vivir mucho tiempo. It was reported that it died when its legs collapsed under its own weight.
