Questo è un ritratto di John Gibbons con il suo famoso ox Herefordshire. L'animale era uno staggering 6ft 3in (1.9m) alto alle spalle e pesava 1300 kg. Un bue medio nel 1780 sarebbe stato di circa 4ft (1.2m) e pesava 500 kg. John Gibbons, un signore agricoltore di Long Sutton nei culi del Lincolnshire sud-orientale, ha vinto il bue a una lotta di galli. Stubbs include il galletto campione in questo dipinto. Gibbons ha trasportato l'animale dal Lincolnshire a Londra, dove è stato esposto in varie mostre. Purtroppo, il bue era troppo grande per vivere molto a lungo. È stato riferito che è morto quando le sue gambe sono crollate sotto il suo peso.
