Come restauratore al Louvre, Michel divenne familiare con i paesaggi olandesi del XVII secolo di Van Ruisdael, Van Goyen e Rembrandt. Anche se le opere di Michel sono raramente datate, rendendo difficile capire lo sviluppo del proprio stile paesaggistico, opere come questo hanno fornito un collegamento alla tradizione settentrionale ben prima di quelli dell'inglese John Constable ha causato una sensazione a Parigi nel 1824. Questa visione immaginaria è stata dipinta su carta montata su tela, un mezzo economico di partenza con una superficie liscia in emulazione di pannello di legno più costoso, il supporto favorito di vecchi maestri olandesi.
