Michel wurde als Restaurator im Louvre mit holländischen Landschaften aus dem 17. Jahrhundert von Van Ruisdael, Van Goyen und Rembrandt vertraut. Obwohl Michels Arbeiten selten datiert sind, so dass es schwierig ist, die Entwicklung seines eigenen Landschaftsstils zu verstehen, lieferten Werke wie diese einen Link zur nördlichen Tradition, bevor die des Engländers John Constable 1824 in Paris ein Gefühl verursachte. Diese imaginäre Ansicht wurde auf Papier auf Leinwand montiert lackiert, ein kostengünstiges Mittel, mit einer glatten Oberfläche in Emulation von teurer Holzplatte, die bevorzugte Unterstützung der niederländischen alten Meister.
