Gerard David dipinse a Bruges tutta la sua vita. Dove si è formato è sconosciuto, anche se le sue prime opere mostrano l'influenza delle sue radici nord-landesi. I pannelli dell'Annunciazione (1975.1.120), che furono dipinte in grisaille per emulare la scultura, decorarono originariamente i retroscena delle due scene della Passione e formarono insieme le ali mobili di una pala d'altare. Quando le ali furono chiuse, venne mostrata la Vergine Annunciata e l'Arcangelo Gabriele. Quando si apriva, in certi giorni di festa, il Cristo che portava la Croce e la Risurrezione sarebbe stato esposto, affiancando un'immagine centrale, forse la Lamentazione.
