Questa scena non è descritta nella Bibbia, ma è parte della letteratura devozionale medievale. Cristo guarda lo spettatore, invitando la meditazione sulla sua sofferenza che tale letteratura di solito invitava. L'immagine sembra aver formato la parte centrale di una piccola pala d'altare con tapparelle che sopravvivono ad Anversa. Queste includono le figure della Vergine e di San Giovanni Evangelista. Le figure lontane sui copricapo di usura di sinistra ricordano la moda del primo XV secolo e sembrano essere state copiate da un Van Eyck
