Gerard David è stato l'ultimo grande maestro a praticare la tradizione stilistica della pittura primitiva olandese che ha avuto origine da Jan van Eyck. Si tratta di un'arte curiosa, con un approccio radicalmente diverso a quello dei contemporanei italiani, che per inciso erano entusiasti ammiratori dei dipinti del Nord; infatti, era da questi che hanno raccolto il knack della pittura con oli.
