Questo dipinto era conosciuto come L'ammonizione paterna, ma lo spettatore osservante vedrà che questo non è un padre che ammonisce sua figlia. L'uomo, un soldato, è semplicemente troppo giovane. La scena è infatti ambientata in un bordello: l'uomo è un cliente, l'elegante giovane donna è la prostituta, e la donna appena prendendo un sorso dal suo vetro è la procura. Il letto sullo sfondo e il tavolo con specchio anche puntare in questa direzione. Gerard ter Borch ha reso questa delicata materia così subtly che qualche confusione ha avuto origine sulla natura del lavoro. Dalla collezione di Willem Lormier (L'Aia). Acquistato nel 1809, come parte della collezione Van Heteren Gevers (L'Aia).
