Gerard ter Borch fu uno dei più avvincenti artisti olandesi del XVII secolo, riconosciuto allora come ora per i suoi bei ritratti e raffinati soggetti di genere. Questi splendidi ritratti pendenti di Jan van Duren e sua moglie, Margaretha van Haexbergen (1975.1.141 e 1975.1.142), sono tra le opere più importanti dell'artista in qualsiasi collezione americana. Jan van Duren, membro della classe dirigente d'élite di Deventer, si pone nell'abbigliamento ricco di un reggente prospero, mentre la sua moglie statale non è meno opportunamente rivestita. Ter Borch presenta i suoi patroni in un ambiente privo di dettagli: un semplice tavolo rivestito in velluto e una sedia in velluto a frange accompagnano i lettini. L'impostazione restrittiva contrasta con e valorizza i soggetti dipinti di Ter Borch, dignitosi e innotati dalla sua spazzola sensibile.
