Anche se Ter Borch nacque nella città olandese comparativamente provinciale orientale di Zwolle e fece la sua carriera nella vicina Deventer dopo il 1654, era intimamente familiare con la pittura ad Haarlem, Amsterdam e L'Aia. Viaggiò anche a livello internazionale prima del 1650, soprattutto per descrivere i membri dei tribunali olandesi e spagnoli nei negoziati di pace del 1646–48 a Munster. Questa esperienza e il suo stile raffinato e la sua percezione di carattere hanno reso ter Borch un ritrattista di grande successo in e intorno a Deventer. Questo ritratto fu probabilmente dipinto lì alla fine del 1650.
