Die glückliche Hand, op. 18 (The Lucky Hand) is a music drama composed by Arnold Schönberg based on his own libretto. “But the most decisive thing is that a mental process that undoubtedly arises from the action is expressed not only through gestures and movement and music, but also through colors and light; and it must be clear that gestures, colors and light are treated here in a similar way to sounds.” (Arnold Schönberg, 1928) “The lighting crescendo begins with a dim reddish light that moves through brown to a dirty green. Out of this grows a dark blue-grey, followed by violet. This gives way to an intense, dark red that turns to blood red before becoming even brighter and harsher through the addition of increasing levels of orange and then pale yellow, until the harsh yellow light is all that remains, lighting up the second grotto from all sides. The scene ends in bluish light.” (Score)
