Dopo aver eseguito un rigoroso disegno a matita, Gigante realizza la vista luminosa e luminosa della piazza cittadina di Amalfi, quando il mercato era ancora tenuto nel 1856. L’artista raffigura anche la Cattedrale prima del suo restauro in stile neo-bizantino, prima di essere restaurata da Morelli e Vetri dopo il crollo dell’elemento incoronante della facciata avvenuto nel 1861.
