Nel 1664 il celebre scultore e architetto romano Gian Lorenzo Bernini prese parte ad un concorso per progettare la facciata est del palazzo del Louvre a Parigi, che il re Luigi XIV desiderava completare. Questo disegno a mano libera mostra la proposta iniziale di Bernini per la facciata, con un padiglione ovale centrale. Gli archi e le colonne monumentali derivano da precedenti classici, tuttavia il design insolitamente animato di Bernini è stato respinto a favore del piano più convenzionale di Claude Perrault per una fila lineare di colonne su un padiglione rialzato.
