Stuart ha guadagnato una fortuna producendo repliche dei tre ritratti che ha dipinto dalla vita del primo presidente degli Stati Uniti. La tela Frick è considerata una delle due copie dipinte dall'artista per il mercante di Filadelfia John Vaughan. Appartiene al gruppo conosciuto come il tipo “Vaughan”, anche se differisce dalle versioni correlate nel colore del cappotto e nel trattamento dello sfondo.
