Im Jahre 1749 heiratete Martha Dandridge Daniel Parke Custis, den wohlhabendsten Pflanzer in der Virginia Kolonie. Sieben Jahre und vier Kinder später war sie eine sehr wohlhabende Witwe. Sie heiratete George Washington 1759, zog ihn nach oben in Virginia
