En 1749, Martha Dandridge épouse Daniel Parke Custis, le plus riche planteur de la colonie de Virginie. Sept ans et quatre enfants plus tard, elle était une veuve très riche. Elle épousa George Washington en 1759, le faisant monter en Virginie.
