Gilbert Stuart war der erfolgreichste Porträtist des frühen Amerika, der sein enormes natürliches Talent und seinen Wit in der Darstellung von Gleichheit und Charakter demonstrierte. Stuart ist bekannt für seine Porträts von einigen der berühmtesten amerikanischen Männer und Frauen seiner Zeit, vor allem diejenigen, die er aus George Washington. Um die Techniken der late-eighteenth-century englischen Portraiture zu meistern, nahm Stuart ausgedehnte Reisen nach London und Dublin, wo dieses Gemälde erstellt wurde. 1793 kehrte er nach Amerika zurück, wo er den Rest seines Lebens verbrachte.
