Mrs. Joseph Anthony Jr., born Henrietta Hillegas in 1766, was one of ten children of Michael and Henrietta Hillegas of Philadelphia. Su padre hizo su fortuna en refinación de azúcar y fabricación de hierro, y sirvió como el primer tesorero de los Estados Unidos. Henrietta se casó con Joseph Anthony en 1785. Como con muchos de los retratos de las mujeres de la sociedad de Filadelfia, la semejanza de la Sra. Anthony está dotada de una individualidad y una sensualidad rara en el retrato americano.
