Mrs. Joseph Anthony Jr., born Henrietta Hillegas in 1766, was one of ten children of Michael and Henrietta Hillegas of Philadelphia. Su padre hizo su fortuna en refinación de azúcar y fabricación de hierro, y sirvió como el primer tesorero de los Estados Unidos. Henrietta se casó con Joseph Anthony en 1785.
