Mme Joseph Anthony Jr., née Henrietta Hillegas en 1766, était l'un des dix enfants de Michael et Henrietta Hillegas de Philadelphie. Son père a fait fortune dans le raffinage du sucre et la fabrication de fer, et a servi comme premier trésorier des États-Unis. Henrietta a épousé Joseph Anthony en 1785. Comme pour beaucoup de portraits de femmes de la société de Philadelphie Stuart, la ressemblance de Mme Anthony est dotée d'une individualité et d'une sensibilité rares dans le portrait américain.
