Dieses Portrait von Präsident Washington, genannt Gibbs-Channing-Avery-Porträt, ist eine von achtzehn ähnlichen Arbeiten, die als Vaughan-Gruppe bekannt sind. Der erste dieser Art, vermutlich aus dem Leben gemalt und dann in allen anderen kopiert, ursprünglich gehörte Samuel Vaughan, ein Londoner Kaufmann in Philadelphia und ein enger Freund von Washington. Dieses ursprüngliche Porträt von Stuart, das 1795 nach Rembrandt Peale gemalt wurde, wurde anschließend von Joseph Harrison von Philadelphia erworben. Während in Harrisons Sammlung, Rembrandt Peale kopiert es viele Male. Die jetzt im Metropolitan Museum of Art, als eine der frühesten und besten Repliken betrachtet, wurde an Stuarts enger Freund, Oberst George Gibbs verkauft und anschließend in der Gibbs-Familie herabgestiegen.
