Ancora oggi è difficile definire cosa significa l'avvento di Giorgione per la storia del gusto. Come Proust, ha insegnato che il mondo potrebbe essere guardato in modo più piacevole e soggettivo. La sua ricetta per farlo era quella di infondere la pittura con il lirismo e il romanticismo che erano già attuali nella prosa e nella poesia del suo tempo.
