Tradicionalmente atribuido a Giovanni Ambrogio Figino, este retrato de San Carlos es en cualquier caso la obra de un artista lombardo. Fue hecho a finales del siglo XVI o principios del siglo XVII y refleja el celo devocional que surgió alrededor del gran arzobispo de Milán, y que culminó en su canonización en 1610. Federico Borromeo se refirió a este retrato como el mejor que había sido pintado de San Carlos.
