Nel 1746 Canaletto viaggiò in Inghilterra e nel decennio successivo produsse un ricco record di Londra media georgiano. In questo elaborato lavoro finito, disegnato come elemento da collezionista, la città di Londra è vista dall'alto della terrazza della Old Somerset House, progettata da Inigo Jones nel 1630. Le scale portano al Tamigi, che si snoda con il traffico fluviale. Nella lontananza sorge il Ponte Vecchio di Londra, mentre la cattedrale di San Paolo si affaccia su uno skyline punteggiato di guglie della chiesa.
