Il pittore napoletano Caracciolo fu profondamente influenzato da Caravaggio, che lavorò a Napoli nel 1606–7 e nel 1610. Tra le innovazioni di Caravaggio c’erano soggetti narrativi di mezza lunghezza, come questo, oltre ai suoi celebri e audaci contrasti di luce e ombra. L’opera di Caracciolo raffigura il momento in cui Gesù chiede a Matteo, un avarizioso pubblicatore, di rinunciare ai suoi beni mondani e di seguirlo. Lo sguardo di Gesù e il gesto esteriore presentano lo spettatore con la stessa banchina di Matteo: sia per abbracciare l’invito di Cristo o per prendere il sacco di soldi tenuto a portata di mano al bordo inferiore della tela.
