Quest'uomo portato con un'ascia può essere identificato come Mattia, l'ultimo degli apostoli, scelto per prendere il posto di Giuda dopo il suo tradimento di Cristo. Probabilmente proviene da una delle diverse serie di teste degli apostoli ideate da Piazzetta e ampiamente diffuse quando incise Marco Pitteri. L’artista francese Fragonard è noto per aver ammirato le incisioni di Pitteri dopo gli apostoli di Piazzetta quando li incontrò in una bottega veneta nel 1774.
