San Girolamo è mostrato nel suo ritiro penitenziale nel deserto siriano, dove si ritirò circa 374-6. Studia la Bibbia, che tradusse in latino dall'originale greco ed ebraico intorno al 400 d.C., ed è accompagnata dal leone dalla cui zampa, secondo la leggenda, disegnò una spina. La sua grotta è nel deserto, ma una città murata come quelle nei territori della terraferma di Venezia può essere vista in lontananza. Questo dipinto a volte è stato considerato da un seguace di Bellini. È conosciuto in altre versioni.
