Saint Jerome wird in seinem penitential Exerzitien in der syrischen Wildnis gezeigt, wo er etwa 374-6 zurückzog. Er studiert die Bibel, die er aus dem ursprünglichen Griechen und Hebräisch um 400 n. Chr. ins Latein übersetzte, und wird von dem Löwen begleitet, von dessen Pfoten, nach der Legende, er einen Dorn auszog. Seine Höhle ist in der Wildnis, aber eine ummauerte Stadt wie jene in den Festlandgebieten von Venedig kann in der Ferne gesehen werden. Dieses Gemälde wurde manchmal von einem Anhänger von Bellini betrachtet. Es ist in anderen Versionen bekannt.
