San Jerónimo se muestra en su retiro penitencial en el desierto sirio, donde se retiró alrededor de 374-6. Estudia la Biblia, que tradujo al latín del griego original y hebreo alrededor de 400 dC, y está acompañado por el león de cuya pata, según la leyenda, sacó una espina. Su cueva está en el desierto, pero una ciudad amurallada como las de los territorios continentales de Venecia se puede ver a la distancia. Este cuadro ha sido considerado a veces por un seguidor de Bellini. Es conocido en otras versiones.
