Un berger semble guider son troupeau de brebis curieux de la campagne italienne dans la galerie. Castiglione peint des sujets historiques et religieux, comme l'Ecstasy de Saint François, accroché dans la galerie adjacente, mais son exploration de paysages et d'animaux tels que celui-ci ont été particulièrement prisés et influents. Techniquement innovant en tant que peintre et imprimeur, Castiglione a utilisé son support cuivre pour imbiber cette scène avec une luminosité chaleureuse.
