Il soggetto del disegno si basa sul Libro della Genesi (21:14-19). Hagar e suo figlio, Ishmael, furono mandati via da Abramo e vagarono senza meta nel deserto di Beersheba. Essi erano in pericolo di morire di sete, ma Dio ha sentito il pianto del ragazzo e ha mandato un angelo per mostrare loro la strada per un pozzo.[...] Come si può riconoscere nel movimento un po 'melodramatico delle figure e nella costruzione grossolana del primo piano, con i suoi brevi, rotti pennellate e trattini, il disegno di Berlino non appartiene al periodo medio dell'artista – come suggerito da Dreyer – ma piuttosto al suo tardo periodo.
