L'attribuzione di questo ritratto affascinante è stata molto discussa. È insolito sia per la chiarezza del sitter che per il carattere simile al box dell'impostazione. Era destinato ad avere connotazioni funerarie, stabilendo una funzione commemorativa per il ritratto, o è lo scopo della prospettiva enfatica e l'ombra del cast per affermare la "presenza" illusionistica della materia? L'opera pone quindi domande fondamentali sull'uso della ritrattistica nella Firenze quattrocentesca. L'immagine risale al 1445 circa.
