Das Altarstück wurde von Giovanni Francesco Caroto für den Altar der Kirche Saint Massenza gemalt, ursprünglich in der Krypta der Kathedrale von Trient. In der Zeit von 1738 bis 1743 wurde die Leinwand getrimmt, um einen neuen Rahmen zu passen, angeblich von dem Maler Nicolò Dorigati, der ihm die Figur von Saint Giovannino hinzugefügt. Das Kunstwerk ist für den lokalen religiösen Kult und die Tradition sehr wichtig, denn links sieht man die Schutzheiligen der Diözese, Vigilius und Massenza. Im Hintergrund wird die Episode vor dem Martyrium des heiligen Vigilius dargestellt, nämlich die Überwindung der Statue eines heidnischen Gottes im Zuge seiner Evangelisierung von Val Rendena.
