Un angelo, non la luna, illumina il cielo notturno di questa incantevole raffigurazione di pastori che arrivano ad adorare il Bambino addormentato, manifestato notevolmente robusto e simile alla statua. Girolamo, che ha lavorato per la corte di Ferrara, aveva visitato Roma, dove ha studiato l'opera di Raffaello e tratto dall'antica scultura. Questa esperienza ha plasmato le sue idee sull'innobling pose e gesti - anche se senza perdere un fascino ingraziante, evidente qui nelle espressioni scambiate dei pastori e del paesaggio roccioso con i suoi edifici e cascata.
