Parmigianino scheint eine weibliche Figur, die ein Heiliger oder ein römischer Sklave sein kann, als Experiment in Technik und Ausdrucksform gemacht zu haben. Anstatt weiß nur für Highlights zu verwenden, wie es damals üblich war, wendete er es ausführlich auf das Gesicht, die Hände und die Draperie der Frau an, um Volumen und Detail zu schaffen. Der Kontrast zwischen weißer Körperfarbe und schwarzer Kreide bewirkt eine subtile Wirkung von Licht und Dunkel, die der meditativen Pose und Expression der Figur angemessen ist.
