Enmarcado por las flores de un viburnum, este magpie se representa con gran atención al detalle, reflejando un gusto por el naturalismo idealizado característico de la academia de pintura imperial de la dinastía de la Canción Sur de China (1127–1279). Las pinturas chinas, atestadas por los shoguns de Ashikaga del siglo XV, ejercieron una fuerte influencia sobre los artistas japoneses del período de Muromachi, cuando la cultura china también sirvió como modelo para el sacerdocio Zen y la élite educada. Poco se sabe sobre el artista, pero un buen número de pinturas de aves y flores de estilo académico tienen su sello o se han atribuido a su mano.
