Incorniciato dai fiori di un viburnum, questa gazza è raffigurata con grande attenzione ai dettagli, riflettendo un gusto per il naturalismo idealizzato caratteristico dell'Accademia di pittura imperiale della dinastia Song Meridionale della Cina (1127-1279). I dipinti cinesi, custoditi dagli shogun di Ashikaga del XV secolo, esercitarono una forte influenza sugli artisti giapponesi del periodo Muromachi, quando la cultura cinese servì anche come modello per il sacerdozio Zen e l'élite istruita. Poco si sa dell'artista, ma un buon numero di dipinti di uccelli e fiori in stile accademico caratterizzano il suo sigillo o sono stati attribuiti alla sua mano.
