En sus Metamorfoses, el antiguo poeta romano Ovid contó la historia del cazador Cephalus, que equivoca a su esposa Procris por su presa, hiriéndola fatalmente con su lanza. En la versión de Schalcken de este trágico cuento, Cephalus cuna a su esposa en sus brazos mientras caduca en el suelo forestal. El tratamiento de conservación reciente ha descubierto la representación gráfica del artista de las heridas de Procris, que habían sido pintadas en un momento posterior de acuerdo con las sensibilidades victorianas. Junto a esta representación realista del cuerpo, la obra muestra la atención de Schalcken a efectos refinados de iluminación y textiles lujosos.
